SOMATULINE DEPOT is a prescription medicine used in adults for: the treatment of a type of cancer known as neuroendocrine tumors, from the gastrointestinal tract or the pancreas (GEP-NETs) that has spread or cannot be removed by surgery; and the treatment of carcinoid syndrome to reduce the need for the use of short-acting somatostatin medicine. Most GEP-NET patients have tumors that express somatostatin receptors. In June 2016, FDA approved a diagnostic imaging method that uses dotatate tagged with a different radioactive element, gallium-68, to locate somatostatin receptor–positive tumors using positron emission tomography (PET) scans.
